PM News -The Parliament Museum is a museum in the Parliament of India Library Building in New Delhi, close to the Sansad Bhavan. It was inaugurated by the then Speaker of Lok Sabha on 29 December 1989, in Parliament House Annexe, subsequently, it shifted to its present in a Special Hall of the Sansadiya Gyanpeeth, Parliament Library Building, where it was inaugurated on 7 May 2002 by the President of India, K. R. Narayanan. The interactive museum was inaugurated by President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on 15 August 2006. It is an interactive museum that tells us the story of the freedom struggle of India. It also has a rare collection of gifts from foreign delegates to the Speaker of Lok Sabha.

How to Reach- The nearest metro station is Central Secretariat, from here one can take a local bus like that of route no. 540, 580, 480, 680, 581, etc. to reach here in around 10 minutes.

Timings
The museum is open from 11.00 AM to 5 PM from Tuesdays to Saturdays. The Museum remains closed every Sunday and Monday, during the inter-Session period; it is open on Mondays when the Parliament is in session.
History
In 2004, after assuming the Office of Speaker, Lok Sabha, Somnath Chatterjee expressed keen personal interest in setting up a Museum on democratic heritage in India, a museum that he thought would be modern, high-tech, and would conform to international standards. Dr. Saroj Ghose, former President of the International Council of Museums, Paris, and retired Director General of the National Council of Science Museums in India were invited to submit an appropriate proposal.
After the final proposal was accepted, the construction work started under the guidance of Parliament officials and elected leaders. On 14 August 2006, it was inaugurated by Prof A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the then President of India, in presence of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, then vice-president, Dr. Manmohan Singh Prime Minister, Somnath Chatterjee, Speaker of Lok Sabha and many other distinguished guests. On 5 September 2006, the Museum was opened to the general public.
In the Democratic heritage section, Ashokan and Akbar’s ideologies are presented in an interesting way via sculptures, paintings, etc. These were the base of the formulation of our constitution. The constitution section has all the pages of India’s Constitution on display. The Constitution of India is the longest-written constitution in all of the sovereign countries and has 448 articles. The contribution of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was highly significant in the formulation of the Constitution.
Parliament of India undoubtedly possesses supreme power over all political parties of India and comprises of the President, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha. The main attraction of this gallery is a real-like model of India’s first Prime Minister Nehru, delivering a soul-stirring ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech at midnight of Independence.
Freedom movement gallery houses the natural costumes of people from all parts of the country, pleasing patriotic songs in a variety of languages like Bengali, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Sanskrit, etc.
Important events like the partition of Bengal, the Quit India Movement, the Dandi March, etc are shown via interactive multimedia techniques where visitors can find themselves, taking part in the movements, on the screen. Transfer of Power displays legislative reforms, the evolution of political parties, and the multicultural background India has always had.
The museum has a Resource Center which contains all relevant information, is equipped with the latest technology computers, and can be easily accessed by scholars, students, and researchers. The entire museum tells a story. One can see the voting process of general elections, sit in recreated chambers of Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha, and listen to the enchanting voices of Gandhiji, Subhash Chandra Bose, etc.
